However, it is equally stressing for parents who struggle to keep the kids warm enough and prevent them from catching cold or worse. In this article, we will discuss some of the easy measures that parents can take to keep the kids warm during the upcoming winter season.
Tips To Keep Kids Warm During Upcoming Winter
Winter season can be unpredictable and filled with storms, dangerously low temperatures & arctic blasts. Here are some useful homely tips to follow and keep this time filled with fun for the kids –
1) How to Dress up the Kids during Winter season
- Layers are always a parents best friend when it comes to protecting the child from the cold season. Instead of putting on just a think coat, make sure that the child is dressed up in several thin clothing layers to keep them warm and dry.
- Make sure that child has atleast a hat (to protect the ears & head) & warm boots and gloves while going out. Ears are usually the most unprotected & sensitive areas in a kids body and needs to be protected against cold winds.
- Make sure that the child does not get overheated if you are inside the house or travelling outside in a car. Remove the think bulky coats once the child is seated safely inside the car and put it back before stepping out.
- If the child is young, extreme care should be taken while covering them with blankets because it can act as a potential suffocation hazard.
2) Safety Precautions While Stepping out of Home
- Keep very close watch on the reported wind-chill before letting the kid step out of the house. If wind chill is reported to be -27 C or lower, do not allow child to step out because there is a severe risk of skin freezing over or Frostbite.
- Don’t allow child to go and play in a area like a park which is far away from a warm shelter. Backyards are much better where child can quickly come inside if cod gets too bitter for them. It also allows parents to keep a close watch on how the children are doing.
- Don’t let children go out unsupervised. Winter season brings with itself other safety hazards like slippery sidewalks & roads where child can fall and get hurt. It is better to coordinate with other parents and make sure that atleast one adult is keeping a close watch at all times. Check more to learn about How to Keep Kids Safe in Cars During Cold Weather
- Don’t let the child walk over to other houses if they are far. It is always better to drive them over to prevent any risk of slipping over while walking on sidewalks.
3) Safety Precautions While Playing Outside
- Teach the child to not touch metal with lips or tongue. Remember that these sensitive parts can get stuck to metal very easily and cause serious damage.
- Help the child select a play area which is far away from water & roads. Roads present a serious risk of black ice forming during winter season which can cause difficulty in stopping the car quickly.
- Be extremely careful while crossing the roads during winter season. Walking signals being turned are not a good enough safety measure so be aware of the surrounding and make sure that traffic is truly fully stopped before stepping onto the road.
- Be extra cautious around snowplows & blowers.
- Teach children to not stand directly under trees covered with heavy snow. A small shake can cause ice to fall on head and cause damage or get inside clothes.
